This week has been an amazing week for me. It all started a few months back when I walked in unannounced and asked for work experience. The organizing secretary and the chairman then spoke to me about it and here I am. On my first day of the internship I had a meeting with the chairman James Fanshaw and he explained to me how local government worked. Before coming to the internship I never realized how big local government actually was and the amount of politics happens without me knowing at a local level. After lunch I headed down to the district council offices where I met with the leader of the district council, Tony Dignum. This was a really good experience as I got to know a bit more of what the district council did and its roles in everyone’s day-to-day life. On the second day I got in to the conservative office to talk to the organizing secretary Julia Hixson and the deputy head of conservative futures Lawrence Abel. I then walked round to the city council offices where I met with the mayor, and we talked about the councils various different roles within the city. On the Wednesday I got up early and headed up to portcullis house where I met Gillian Keegan and she talked to me about her roles as district councilor and about her aspirations for being an MP. I then sat in on a meeting for the women2win whilst looking around and seeing key figures in parliament walking round sipping coffee, which was a bit surreal. On the Thursday I then met up with county councilor Simon Oakley who took me round the county council chambers and explained to me the various jobs for the council. And then on the last day I met up with district councilor Jane Kilby who showed me the Chichester vision and how the council was going to pedestrianize West Street and South Street and the revamping of the canal basin. Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the conservative association and have learnt many new things and met new people. I would like to say thank you to the organizing secretary Julia Hixson and to the CCA chairman James Fanshaw for organizing an amazing week for me.
